Cardenas Resigns as 12th Ward Alderman

As expected and previously announced, 12th Ward Alderman George Cardenas has resigned from the City Council, soon to assume the post of commissioner on the Cook County Board of Review.

Alderman George Cardenas Announces Resignation from the Chicago City Council After 20 Years of Service

​Chicago 12th Ward -- Alderman George A. Cardenas yesterday sent Mayor Lightfoot the attached resignation letter. Alderman Cardenas will be resigning from the Chicago City Council, effective at the end of this month, November 30, 2022. His resignation comes after serving residents of the 12th Ward, on Chicago’s southwest side, for 20 years. He is resigning to take on his new role as the anticipated elected Commissioner of the First District of the Cook County Board of Review. Alderman Cardenas won the Democratic primary for Commissioner in June and is unopposed in the general election next week.

Pursuant to state law, Mayor Lightfoot will appoint a replacement as the alderman of the 12th Ward of Chicago.

About Alderman George A. Cardenas

George A. Cardenas was born in Durango, Mexico, and immigrated to Chicago as a child. He graduated from Lane Technical High School. Cardenas served in the Navy and was stationed on naval ships and bases in the 1980s, mainly in the Mediterranean Sea. Cardenas earned an undergraduate degree in Accounting and a master’s degree in Political Science from Northeastern Illinois University. Cardenas has worked in auditing, management, and consulting for Fortune 500 companies.

Alderman George A. Cardenas was first elected Alderman of the 12th Ward of Chicago in 2003.

He and his family live in McKinley Park, on Chicago’s southwest side.

About the 12th Ward

The 12th Ward is on Chicago’s southwest side. The 12th Ward from the previous election consisted of the Chicago neighborhoods of McKinley Park, Brighton Park, Douglas Park, and Little Village. The newly redistricted 12th Ward consists of the Chicago neighborhoods of McKinley Park and Brighton Park.
